August 12, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s First Vice President and leader of the SPLM-IO, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, has on Wednesday met the UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and deputy head of UN mission in South Sudan, Guang Cong, in his office in Juba.
Speaking to SSBC following the meeting with Machar, Cong said he discussed with the main armed opposition leader the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and how the UN mission in the world’s youngest country can best support the process.
“I met the H.E Dr. Riek Machar, the First Vice President. I introduced myself to him and briefed him about the ongoing efforts by UNMISS to support the peace process and the revitalized peace agreement,” Cong said.
“We discussed the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement I congratulated him and all the parties to the peace agreement for the latest agreement on the responsibility-sharing arrangements at the state levels. I hope with this latest agreement, the state administrations can be put in place as soon as possible to address the power vacuum at the sub-national level,” he added.
The senior UN official said the two men discussed the ongoing violence in the Greater Jonglei and discussed what he said were ongoing efforts to support reconciliation and dialogue between communities.
“We also discussed the Jonglei issue. I briefed his Excellency about the ongoing efforts by UNMISS to support the government and the communities to promotes dialogue, reconciliation in Jonglei area,” he said.
“His Excellency reiterated the important of dialogue and reconciliation and also the improvement of infrastructure in Jonglei area. We also discussed how to strengthen the partnership between UNMISS and the national unity government and we explored a number of different ideas,” he further added.
