March 5th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar Teny and opposition leader has this afternoon submitted his list of ministers to President Salva Kiir for appointment, an aide to the former rebel leader said.
Based on the revitalized peace agreement, Machar’s SPLM-IO is entitled to 9 ministries out of the 35 ministries created by the 2018 peace agreement.
Last month, he was appointed as First Vice-President, an action also provided for in the peace agreement.
Kiir and Machar were expected to form the government on February 22, the same day Machar was inaugurated, but disagreements over who take what ministry had since delayed the formation of the Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU).
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this afternoon, an aide close to Machar said the first vice-president submitted, during a meeting with president Kiir today in Juba, the list of 9 ministers including one female nominee.
The aide who refused to identify the nominees said consultations within the group were also underway to identify governors for the three states the government has agreed to give to SPLM-IO.
“The First Vice-President have submitted the names of those [who] will be appointed as ministers based on the ministerial positions granted by the agreement to the IO,” the opposition official said on condition of anonymity.
“As for the governors, we have three states which are Upper Nile, Lakes and Eastern Equatoria. Consultations are underway to identify those who will be nominated,” he added.
