February 19th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny will be appointed as first vice president anytime this week, a senior government official has said.
Machar who is a signatory to the revitalized peace agreement is to be appointed to the position which he held prior to the collapse of a 2015 peace agreement in 2016 as per the peace deal.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this morning, a government official said on condition of anonymity that the opposition official will be appointed after they agreed to form the government late this week.
“Dr. Riek will be appointed anytime this week as the First Vice President and then they will form the government,” the government official said referring to President Salva Kiir and Machar.
The news comes less than a week after Kiir agreed to the return of the country to ten states. A dispute on the controversial and now defunct 32 states was threatening the formation of the unity government.
The official said the main armed opposition leader was preparing a list of 9 ministers entitled to him by the revitalized government adding other opposition groups have been asked to submit their nominees including those for vice president.
