December 2nd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny has returned to the Sudanese capital Khartoum after a visit to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa where a meeting of IGAD leaders initially expected to release him was taking place.
The IGAD meeting would have determined the status of the SPLM-IO leader who has been under what the group describes as an “illegal” detention since the second outbreak of the South Sudanese civil war in 2016 after fighting ceased for months.
The meeting instead referred the many issues – including the deliberation on Machar status – to the next IGAD meeting due before next year in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
In a brief statement on Sunday, the SPLM-IO director of information and public relations Puok Both Baluang announced the return of the main armed opposition leader along with accompanying delegation.
“H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon and his accompanying delegation arrived back to Khartoum after 2 days visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the 13th IGAD Heads of State & Government Ordinary Summit,” he wrote.
