December 24th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader and First Vice President designate Dr. Riek Machar has returned to the Sudanese capital Khartoum where he resides after two weeks in Juba in which he attempted with President Kiir to resolve the outstanding issues of the peace agreement.
“The Chairman and Commander in Chief H.E Dr. Riek Machar Teny has returned to Khartoum this evening along with all members of the delegation who accompanied him to Juba the week before last week,” an opposition official said from Khartoum this evening.
Machar has been in talks with Kiir over the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement. They were trying to find a breakthrough over pending issues such as the security arrangements and the number and boundaries of states.
Last Monday, the two men gave contradicting accounts of what would then follow. Kiir said they agreed to form the unity government after the end of the pre-transitional period in February “regardless” of what would be pending.
Machar for his part said the unity government formation depends on the implementation of the outstanding issues because of which the pre-transitional period has been extended several times sparking international anger.
