Machar Assures BBC He Will Return To South Sudan

Oct 18, 2016(Nyamilepedia) —– South Sudan’s ousted First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny whose forces control half of the country, assures BBC HARDtalk’s Stephen Sackur that he will return to South Sudan as soon as he leaves South Africa.

Machar accuses his main rival Salva Kiir, who used 7 aircrafts and foreign intelligence to pursue him to DR Congo, of fearing a fair, transparent and free elections.

“Because President Salva Kiir doesn’t want democratic and transparent and fair elections to be conducted, he attacked us, he has restarted the war,” he told BBC HARDtalk’s Stephen Sackur, speaking from South Africa.

Machar has hopes that wise leaders in the region and Africa will resuscitate a political process that may ends the conflict in South Sudan.

“But I am hoping that wise leaders in the region, and in Africa, and the rest of the word, will throw up a political process which will bring about peace again, and the resuscitation of the peace agreement, and the reconstitution of the transitional government of national unity,” Machar added.

Although the government in Juba has made it clear that Riek would rather leave them alone, Machar says none of his rivals controls his activities until they denounce violence and make peace with his opposition military movement, the SPLM/SPLA-IO.

Within the last five days, Machar has spoken to many media houses ranging from Kenyan’s radio 105, TVC Nigeria, Washington based VOA, BBC and many local media houses in South Africa.

This is the first time Machar spoke to media houses about the incidents which happened in Juba in July this year and way forwards to resolve the conflict in South Sudan, however, he found his rivals have dominated the media with a version Machar believes is an “absolute lie”.

Machar calls on the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission(JMEC) to leave Juba and safe resources since all the peace partners and signatories have abandoned the peace process.

Other stakeholders who have fled Juba include Pagan Amum, the leader of the SPLM Leaders and Dr. Lam Akol, who has now formed a rebel movement.
