Chuol has stood against bad governance and poor leadership in South Sudan for many years.

Before the ongoing conflict broke out in December 2013, Gatluak Chuol opposed the injustices of the government of South Sudan and its ruling party(SPLM/SPLA) through Sudan People’s Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM-DC), which was then led by Dr. Lam Akol, who is currently leading a rebel movement in Upper Nile.

From Jun 13, 2009, he was SPLM-DC Representative in the State of Tennessee in the United States and Secretary General of the SPLM-DC/USA Secretariat but quit SPLM-DC on December 15, 2013 when President Salva Kiir intensified his door to door killing of Nuer ethnic groups in what resulted into the worst genocide in South Sudanese history.

Before his appointment to represent SPLM-IO in New Zealand, Gatluak has been working hard for South Sudanese community in New Zealand and stood tall in support of SPLM-IO.

Chuol, a die-heart supporter of the movement in the Diaspora, work hard to sensitize South Sudanese communities about heinous crimes committed by the Government of South Sudan.

Gatluak holds BS in Finance and Economics in Southwest Minnesota State University in the United States.

He brings with him huge humanitarian experience.

He previously worked as producer and correspondent for Sudan Radio Service in Kenya and currently a volunteer staff with Auckland Resettled Community Coalition where he co-authored “Beyond Refuge: Stories of resettlement in Auckland”.

For many supporters of the of SPLM/A in Opposition, who applauded his appointment on social, and especially those who know him, believe that Mr. Chuol is a great asset to the rebel Movement, SPLM/SPLA(IO).

It is believed that his appointment came at the right time for SPLM(IO) when New Zealand, the country he currently resides in, is tasked to lead the United Nations Mission in South Sudan(UNMISS)

Last month, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed David Shearer of New Zealand as his new Special Representative for South Sudan and Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) succeeding Ellen Margrethe Løj of Denmark.
