Sep 26, 2021 — Latest reports from Luri, a suburb at the outskirts of the capital, Juba, confirmed that at least 4 soldiers died and sixteen other injured on a mission to facilitate return of cattle from the capital Juba to Terekeka.
According to the Inspector General of Police, General Majak Akech Malok, who visited the scene, the soldiers were traveling in two vehicles while escorting unidentified cattle to Terekeka.
Gen. Akech said the soldiers found the Luri River had overflown but instead they tried to cross it despite the high volume and speed of the water current.
“our soldiers were assigned to facilitate the return of cattle to their areas. When our soldiers reached the Luri Bridge, they found the river flooded and their two vehicles got overturned [by the current] while trying to cross it,” the Inspector General of Police, General Majak Akech Malok said
The Inspector General confirmed that one of the two vehicles was swept by the current and overturned, killing 4 soldiers and leaving 16 others injured.
“The two vehicles were carrying 20 soldiers, one vehicle was swept away by water and the other one has been recovered. Four soldiers are missing and 16 others are injured, As such I would like to send my condolences to THE families of the four soldiers” He continued
South Sudan is heavily flooded with most parts of the Greater Upper Nile submerged under water and parts of the capital, especially Gumbo suburbs, are sank by a heavy downpour over the weekend.
The flood has displaced hundreds of thousands of people across the country; however, the government treats it as a natural occurrence and no government intervention has been made so far.
