June 25th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Members of Bul community in neighboring Uganda have condemned what they said is a politically motivated and lengthy detention of their son, General Buay Rolnyang, by the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardiit.
General Buay was arrested in May last year after a he was accused by the government that he was trying to rebel against the state. The fierce fighting and his arrest took place in Mayom county in former Unity.
In an interview with the Nyamilepedia on Monday, Malieth Malek Dap, the Bul community secretary-general who is also the acting chairperson said Buay’s arrest and lengthy detention has nothing to do with the alleged attempt to rebel against the government but said it is politically motivated.
“The case was [and] is politically motivated, and there was no connection between the incident that led to his arrest and the fabricated rebellion,” Malek told the Nyamilepedia.
“As a community, we strongly condemn the prolonged detention of our son, and call upon the Government to immediately release Maj. General Buay Rolnyang under a presidential amnesty,” Malek added.
He further regretted the decision by the government of South Sudan to air footage of Buay as he was taken off a military computer in chains in May as he was brought from Bentiu.
“It is really unbelievable to see a national military figure who fought during the liberation struggle being humiliated, like a criminal, while being watched and mocked on the state-run SSBC,” he said.
