November 14th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A committee set by President Salva Kiir Mayardit last month to deliberate on the IBC report has not reached a consensus over how to deliberate on the issue of the number and boundaries of states, sources have said.
Kiir on October 18th appointed a 18-member team to decide on the IBC report. The order said if the committee fail to agree, the principals, President Kiir and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar would then take over.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia on Wednesday, a source in Juba said the committee had failed to agree and asked the principals to takeover the states issue.
“They have agreed,” the source said. “This issue is not a easy task to handle.”
The same source said the government team led by Elia Lomoro and Michael Makuei Lueth wants to maintain the current number of states or extend to 36 while the SPLM-IO wants the country returned to 10 states.
“The government wants the current 32 or 36 while the SPLM-IO want to return the country to 10,” the source said.
“So, this is the point of contention between the parties which led to hand back to the president and first vice president designate,” he added.
