May 14th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit, said on Tuesday that the kissing of their feet by the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, could mean a curse for the South Sudan leaders though he said it could be a blessing.
Kiir was speaking at an event to mark the reopening of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) in Juba on Tuesday.
Kiir said he “was greatly touched and humbled by Pope Francis’ action in kneeling down to kiss our feet” during the spiritual retreat in April.
“To be honest, I was shocked, and I trembled, but I also knew deep down my heart that His Holiness did this to show Christ’s humility. He was telling us to be humble and to be good servants of our people,” Kiir said.
He added that the kissing of their feet by the head of the Roman Catholic Church could be a curse if the leaders do not heeds to cries for peace in South Sudan otherwise.
“Pope Francis’ act of humility is both a blessing and a curse on all of us. A blessing, if we heed to his call for peace and a curse if we play games with the lives of our people,” he said.
