Kiir urges social media users to give peace a chance

June 28th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit, has urged the social media users, specially those who are active on Facebook, to give peace a chance after he instructed troops to stay in their barracks to observe and respect a ceasefire agreement he signed on Wednesday with opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon.

Kiir reiterated his commitment towards implementing the ceasefire, and called on the public to “give peace a chance.”

“Well, the President called on people to used social media responsibly, because they have to observe peace – particularly South Sudanese,”  Ateny Wek Ateny, Press Secretary in the Office of the President told the Eye Radio this afternoon.

Kiir on Thursday evening declared the permanent ceasefire and instructed his forces to remain in their current position but to remain vigilant and respond in case of self-defense.

Machar also, today, officially declared the permanent ceasefire and instructed his troops to observes and respect it.

The two leaders meet for the first time last week in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, and the Khartoum meeting is the second in its kind since the two leaders disagreed in July 2016 following one of the deadly clashes in the country’s capital Juba between guards loyal to the two men.
