September 19th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has threatened to form the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) without Machar’s SPLM-IO if the later hesitated to cooperate.

Kiir made the remarks during a national peace and healing prayer facilitated by the South Sudan Council of Churches (SSCC) at the state house in the capital Juba today.

“If the SPLM IO under Dr. Riek doesn’t want to cooperate on the timely formation of national unity government in November, I will go ahead with other political parties which are signatories to the revitalized peace agreement and form the transitional government of national unity,” Kiir said.

According to the presidency, Kiir “grieved the conflict that erupted at the state House in 2016 and called upon South Sudan council of churches to continue praying for peace and stability to prevail in the country.”

The president in September last year signed the revitalized peace agreement with Dr. Riek Machar. The agreement provided for the establishment of a unity government after a eight-months pre-transitional period.

However, that dateline has not been met because critical tasks supposed to be ready by that time were not completed and the opposition called for the extension of the pre-transitional period for November.

As less than two months ahead, IGAD has acknowledged that implementation of those pre-transitional tasks are behind schedule once again.
