August 14th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardiit has today met the leader of rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), Gibril Ibrahim at the state house in Juba over peace in Sudan.
JEM has been a foreign ally to President Salva Kiir and has been one of the mercenaries fighting alongside Kiir’s SPLA faction since the eruption of South Sudan civil war in December 2013.
According to a presidency statement, the two men discussed the peace process in Sudan and ways of achieving permanent stability in the troubled north-east African country.
“In a move to restore long term lasting peace and stability in Sudan, President Salva Kiir Mayardit held an productive meeting with the Chairman of Justice and Equality Movement, Dr. Gibriel Ibrahim Mahamed Diallo at the state house in Juba,” the Presidency said in a statement seen by the Nyamilepedia.
“The efforts of President Kiir to bring peace to Sudan are geared towards ensuring that all the rebel movements in Sudan end the on-going political turmoil and accept peace as they work collectively with the leadership of the Transitional Military Council and the Freedom and Change movement,” the statement added.
It is not the first time the South Sudanese head of state met Sudanese rebel leader. In June, Kiir held separate meetings with Sudanese parties including the government over how to restore peace in the country after the ouster of President Bashir’s 30-year old regime.
