Kiir says Machar ‘had no choice’ other than signing peace deal

October 25th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit have said prominent opposition and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon had no choice other than signing a peace agreement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Kiir and Machar signed the long-awaited awaimed peace deal in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to bring to an end the ongoing civil war in the young African nation.

The signing of the revitalized agreement is a part of regional effort spearheaded by IGAD to try to end the ongoing five-year old brutal conflict which has killed thousands and displaced millions.

In an exclusive interview with the Kenyan based CTV one on one program, Kiir said Machar had no choice other than signing the peace agreement.

“I believe that he (Machar) did not have any other choice but [to] sign the peace agreement,” Kiir said when asked whether Machar is happy with the agreement.

He said he can’t determine whether Machar is thinking of doing anything else and was saying something else.

“I can not tell what was in his heart but as we greeted ourselves, we met many times. All the time when there is a peace talk in Addis Ababa, and we meet there and we sit down and we talk,” Kiir said pointing out that he met Machar in both Khartoum and Kampala.

Kiir in the interview also denied any wrongdoing owing by the SPLA which has been accused of Violations against human rights laws in some parts of the country.
