February 29th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan president Salva Kiir Mayardit has rewarded the country’s lawmakers $10 million to cover medical allowances, a lawmaker has said.
The grand from the country’s president is not the first of its kind. In 2019, Kiir gave the same lawmakers about $16 millions to spend on cars and housing.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this afternoon, a lawmaker at the national legislature said they were rewarded $25,000 each to spend on medical insurance.
“Yes, we have been given the money by the president. This will be spend on medication by the lawmakers. Everyone get $25,000,” the lawmaker who requested not to be named said.
It is not however clear where the government get the money. Aid organizations said more than half of the country’s population is lacking food and as such is facing starvation.
Kiir and opposition groups signed a revitalized peace deal in September 2018. They are not in the process of forming what would be the revitalized R-TGoNU.
