June 20th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardiit and prominent opposition and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny met today in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa after nearly two years since the collapse of the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) provided for in the 2015 peace agreement in July 2016, sources told the Nyamilepedia.
The meeting, one SPLM-IO official said, was conducted only in presence of the Ethiopian Premier who is the host of the two South Sudanese leaders and non from other South Sudanese officials from both side had knowledge about the outcome.
“The meeting was held between the two leaders only in presence of the Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed. No one knows what the two leaders discussed,” the opposition official told the Nyamilepedia on the condition of anonymity.
Another official said the meeting is expected to continue tomorrow morning raising positive prospect for the commitment of the two leaders.
“The meeting will continue on Thursday morning between the two leaders. We have been informed and the president will not return to Juba tomorrow before the Ethiopian government could announce the outcome of the face-to-face talks,” another source said.
Machar arrived in the Ethiopian capital this morning after a release from a two-year detention in the South African city of Pretoria and Kiir traveled on Wednesday to the Ethiopian capital. The two were invited by the Ethiopian leader to discuss their differences in a face-to-face encounter which late today brought the two leader together in two years.
