July 28, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny, have formed a high-level military committee to investigate last week’s incident in Wau in which a senior SPLA-IO commander was arrested and detained by the SSPDF.
Last week, a group of SPLA-IO soldiers under the command of Brigadier General Gabriel Bol Wek came under attack and were disarmed and detained by a force stationed between Tonj and Wau for the purpose of disarmament.
The SPLA-IO retaliated by arresting a number of government soldiers including a few civilians who were then moving with the SSPDF soldiers together.
Those civilians have so far been released, according to a statement by Lam Paul Gabriel, the SPLA-IO deputy spokesman who is now in Juba and who is also a member of the joint defence board and a press secretary for minister of defence.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this evening, a senior opposition official said the two principals to the agreement – Kiir and Machar – have formed a committee to investigate the incident which raised alarm over the implementation of the revitalised peace agreement.
“The two principals have constituted a committee to investigate the incident which occurred in Wau last week and which led to the detention of some soldiers from our side. This is a great step and the Joint Defence Board (JDB) has been directed to complete the process,” the official said from Juba on condition of anonymity.
According to the senior opposition official, the committee is constituted as follow:
1 – Lt. Gen.Charles Dut Akol chairperson of JMCC
2 – Lt. Gen. AShab Khamis Fahal JDB
3 – Brig. Gen Pal Yiech
4 – Col. Deng William Aguer JDB
