December 11th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny are reportedly studying a proposal that would see the reduction of the current 32 states to 24, sources with knowledge have said.

One opposition source told the Nyamilepedia from Juba this morning that the two leaders met yesterday and agreed to first meet the security mechanism before deliberating on the the proposal tabled by the government to reduce the number of states.

“The two principals are studying a proposal tabled by the government in which the current 32 would be reduced to 24 plus Abyei,” the source said.

A government official said the new proposal will see Abiemnom joining Mayom to make a new state. Parieng and Guit County to make a new state and Rubkona county to make a state of its own.

In Bahr el-Ghazal, Twic state, Aweil East, Gok state will be affected but the official didn’t detail if these would form a new state.

In Equatoria region, Terekeka state and Amadi state will be affected by the new proposal.

Meanwhile in Upper Nile, Fashoda and Maiwut state will be dissolved. Bieh in Jonglei would be dissolved to join Akobo state.
