April 10th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President,  Salva Kiir Mayardiit, and Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, met this afternoon in the Italian capital Rome and discussed South Sudan’s fragile peace deal according to a statement by the presidency.

Kiir and SPLM-IO leader, Machar, are both in Italy where they are expected to meet Thursday as part of an initiative by Pope Francis – the head of the Catholic Church – to try to build trust between the two men whose wrangling over the SPLM leadership plunged the country into chaos in December 2013.

In a statement issued this afternoon, the South Sudan presidency said Kiir met the Italian leader who pledged to support the ongoing peace implementation.

The statement added that the Italian premier also promised to work to convince European leaders on the sideline of a EU meeting due for later today in Brussels.

“President Kiir held bilateral talks with the Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte. After the meeting, Mr. Conte said his country was committed to the stability of South Sudan, adding that his government will commit resources to boost efforts at implementing the peace process in the country,” the statement partly said.

“Prime Minister Conte reiterated his commitment in supporting the peace agreement, including the allocation of resources,” the further said,  adding that the Italian leader “would take time in the EU meeting in Brussels today to engage with the leaders so that they would support the peace agreement.”
