January 30th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir Mayardit has this morning headed to South Africa for a state visit, a week after invitation from President Cyril Ramaphosa, the presidency announced.

While in South Africa, the South Sudanese head of state is expected to discuss with his South African counterpart – beside bilateral relations – the ongoing peace process which has seen many setbacks as parties signatory to the 2018 peace agreement are differing over the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

Presidential press secretary Ateny Wek Ateny said the bilateral meeting will discuss the “outstanding issues, the security and the issue of states, as well as the unity government which is expected to be formed.”

Kiir and several opposition groups signed a peace agreement in 2018 after half a decade of a bloody civil war.

The agreement provided for the formation of a unity government in which Kiir will retain his position as president and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny will deputize him as first vice president.

Ramaphosa who will take over the African Union leadership this year said on Tuesday that South Sudan and Libyan conflict will be on top of his agenda this year.
