February 1st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The main armed opposition group,  SPLM-IO, led by the country’s former First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon said on Friday that South Sudan President,  Salva Kiir, and Former Detainees are conspiring against the will of the South Sudanese people.

This came days after the SPLM former detainees announced in Juba following a meeting with Kiir that they have agreed with the President to reunite the fractured SPLM party.

Three SPLM factions which include the ruling faction led by President Kiir, SPLM-IO led by former First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar and SPLM Former Detainees led by Pagan Amum signed in January 2015 a platform to reunite the party.

In a statement issued on Friday, the SPLM-IO Chairperson of National Committee for Information and Public Relations Mabior Garang de’Mabior, said the recent announcement by FDs to join the ruling faction undermines the effort by people to determine who their leaders should be.

“The recent announcement by the FD’s, is the latest conspiracy by the group, aimed at undermining our people’s efforts at determining for themselves, their own destiny,” Mabior said in the statement extended to the Nyamilepedia.

It said the announcement contradicts the ongoing peace process although it is intended by the FDs to portray them as if they are making a confidence-building measure.

“This latest gimmick by the FD’s, is intended to appear as a confidence building measure towards the peace process, when the reality is that it is contradictory to the peace process,” it added.

“The reunification of the SPLM under the Arusha Agreement, should be a voluntarily agreed and should come as a resolution and should not be an agenda,” it added.
