August 13, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has declared a state of emergency in the country’s Jonglei state and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area over the ongoing violence which has raised concerns among the international community on the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
Fighting between the three tribes in Jonglei, the Nuer, Dinka, and Murle has killed hundreds of people since January. Efforts by the government to defuse tensions between those tribes have not been successful.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this morning, a senior government official said the president made the declaration on Wednesday evening and has directed the armed forces, including the SPLM-IO, to take necessary steps to end ethnic violence in the state.
“The President has declared a state of emergency in Jonglei state and Greater Pibor Administrative Area,” the official who spoke to Nyamilepedia on condition of anonymity said from Juba.
“The SSPDF and the SPLA-IO have been told to take all the necessary steps to end violence in Greater Jonglei,” the official added.
