November 1st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has asked the regional community to provide protection for opposition figures who he said may fear for their safety.
Kiir who was speaking today in Rajaf at a Catholic Church ceremony to mark 100 years since its establishment in what was Southern Sudan in 1919 said there is no reason for another extension for the pre-transitional period.
“There is no reason for another extension,” Kiir who was dressed in a black suit asserted.
Kiir said the regional community could provide an additional security for those opposition figures who could not feel safe under the current status of the security arrangements.
“VIPs who do not feel safe can be given additional security by our partners to protect them until such time when the outstanding part of the security arrangements are completed, and they feel secured under the new VIP Protection Unit and the Unified Force,” he said.
Kiir’s insistence to form government this month is strongly being opposed by opposition groups such as Machar’s main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO and NDM.
The two opposition groups wants the outstanding issues settled to – in their own words – ensure a stable government that will not be a recipe for future return to war.
The two groups said they will not be part of the unity government Kiir is threatening to form without them by November 1st.
