Sep 28, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — Kenyatta National hospital workers have officially began their strike today citing delays in salaries increment.
Speaking outside the hospital today, these workers accused the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) of failing to harmonize their salaries.
“SRC is behaving as if it wants to prefect every organ in this country and we cannot have workers go on strike when money has gone through the budgeting process by the relevant organs of this government and especially being passed by parliament,” Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Secretary-General Seth Panyako said.
Mr. Panyako went on to say that the health workers will not go back to work until KNH management receives a letter to implementing the salaries as it was agreed in 2012.
“What we want is to see SRC give that letter, advising Kenyatta National Hospital to effect payment of that money to all affected employees and thereafter the strike will be called off,” said Mr Panyako.
He further said that the money has been approved by the parliament, it’s only that SRC doesn’t not want to implement it.
“KNH management is ready to increase salaries because the money is there. Parliament approved the money through the budget financial year 2020/2021.”Panyako said
“The National Treasury released kSh 601 million to KNH for implementation and therefore the only problem that we have is that SRC doesn’t want KNH to implement it,” He added.
Putting more weight to the matter, Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) branch chairperson Linus Osenye said the SRC ought to implement the 2012 salary review for them to call off the strike.
“We are tired of them asking us to give those 21 days. Does writing a concurrence letter take 21 days? We will not be intimidated and neither will we go back to work until we are told our money is in the bank,” Osenye said.
SRC says re-categorization did not involve a salary review but the health workers are not buying it.
