Oct 19, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa will remain in police custody until Thursday as she waits for a psychiatric examination before she pleads to a murder charge.
The High Court in Mombasa County made the ruling on Monday that Jumwa and her co-accused Geoffrey Otieno who is her aide will remain in custody until they undergo mental checks before they plead on Thursday.
The Presiding Judge, Justice Njoki Mwangi, issued the directives after dismissing their appeal for release on bond.
“It is hereby ordered that the suspects be remanded pending psychiatric examination,” said the judge.
Hon Jumwa and Mr. Geoffrey Otieno will be held at the Mombasa Port police station and will undergo the psychiatric tests at the Coast General Hospital on October 21st.
The two are accused of murder and assault charges over last year’s shooting in Ganda Ward that left one person dead and several others injured.
Jumwa and her co-accused were arrested after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mombasa Regional Head, Alloys Kemo approved murder and assault charges against them over the fatal shooting of the man and injury of several people during the poll.
The incident occurred on October 29, 2019.
Police said at the time that violence broke out when the MP stormed a political meeting organised by Reuben Katana, an ODM candidate in the by-election leading to the fatal shooting of 48-year-old Gumbao Jola.
The two had asked the court to grant them a bond of Sh500,000 which a magistrate’s court granted them last year.
The judge declined their request, saying that the terms only applied to a miscellaneous application by the DPP’s office.
The Ganda Ward seat fell vacant after the nullification of the election of Abdul Omar, an independent candidate who was also supported by Jumwa.
