The move was made following the decline in the number of COVID 19 cases in the country.

Speaking in Malindi, the Sports, Culture and Heritage Principal Secretary, Josephta Mukobe, said that all the heritage sites will reopen.

The former Deputy Director of Human Resource Management further stressed that these sites must adhere to the COVID 19 measures laid down by the government including wearing masks, sanitizing hands and social distancing.

“We have written to the ministry of health, now that we cannot close forever. Life must continue and we must find ways to work with COVID 19.’ SP Josephta Mukobe said.

Tourism is the main source of income for the national museums and monuments of Kenya.

According to PS Josephta, the museums have not made any revenues since March when cultural and heritage sites across the country were closed.

Kenya is home to over 20 museum sits and 9 monuments that are all distributed in various parts of the country.

Some of these sites and facilities are ranked very high as the World heritage sites by the UNESCO.

Lamu Old Town, Fort Jesus and Thimlich Ohinga archaeological sites are some of the museums marked by the UNESCO.

The Principal Secretary is hoping that tourists, both local and international, will start visiting the sites and the situation will gradually improve.
