June 25th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The construction of the Juba – Bahr El-Ghazal highway will cost the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardiit more than half a million dollar, the country’s Minister of Roads and Bridges, Rebecca Joshua Okwaci said on Sunday.

South Sudan government in March signed an agreement with a Chinese road firm to construct a paved road between Juba and the country’s Bahr El-Ghazal region.

The government also said in several occasions that the same construction of paved roads will take place in other parts of the country’s three regions.

Speaking at a the launch site of the road construction in Terekeka on Sunday, Rebecca Joshua, the road minister, said construction of one kilometer of road that is currently about to start will cost the government about $1.5 million.

The cost for the construction of the 395 kilometer road that will start from Juba to Western Bahr El-Ghazal state capital Wau will total $592.5 million

The government has already allocated $700 for the construction of a 400KL road.

1 kilometer is about $1.5 million for the road which is 395 Kilometers or about 400 kilometers [as is] in the contract. This is already public information outside there,” she said.

She further said also involved in the contract are local companies who will also be involved in the construction saying: “We are very keen that the local contractors are involved, you cannot give a contract out to the foreigners and you don’t include the nationals.”
