Jonglei peace conference commenced on Monday, January 25th in Juba

Jan 25, 2021(Nyamilepedia) — Jonglei state peace conference under the leadership of Dr. James Wani Igga has commenced today, January 25th, in the capital, Juba.

Speaking at the opening of the conference at the Freedom Hall, the governor of Jonglei State, Denay Chagor stressed that the conference aims to bring communities across Jonglei State, Greater Pibor Administrative Area and neighboring communities together.

The conference which address the security situation in Jonglei State and Pibor Administrative Area with themes “together for peace, reconciliation and peaceful co-existence” takes place from 25th – 26th January.
Chagor urges the stakeholders to jointly consider peace and development while “using the bottom-up approach”.
Changor concluded by saying that youth should be engaged through “provision of incomes generating activities for them to give-up the culture of cattle rustling”.
The spokesperson of the Jonglei Investigation Committee, Abocha Ali said that they expected about 500 delegates from all communities living in Jonglei with each community expected to produce 15 representatives.

“In total, 500 delegates from all the communities of Jonglei and their neighbors will participate. 300 delegates will be brought from the grassroots. Each community will have 15 representatives, including youth, women, the elderly, and the traditional leaders,” Ali said.

They also expected political representatives from Jonglei and other representatives from the neighbouring communities.

“The remaining 200 will be politicians from the Jonglei communities, observers and representatives of the neighboring communities like Mundari, Lulubo, Pari, Lotuho, and Toposa because they are also affected by this conflict. By the end of the conference, we expect people of Jonglei to identify the root causes of conflicts and come up with recommendations to address them,” he added.

The spokesperson of the Jonglei Investigation Committee said that all resolutions that will be agreed upon during the conference will be implemented immediately.

“As a government, we realize that previous conferences failed because there was no implementation. But this time, all the resolutions will be immediately implemented after the conference, some by the government, the United Nations, and the communities themselves,” Ali said.

Lokali Amae, the Secretary-General of the GPAA, confirmed that the Greater Pibor delegates have arrived in Juba last Monday.

He said that delegates from Pochalla and the Jebel Boma areas started arriving on Monday.

Lokali added that he was informed to notify people in Pibor and the other areas that they will be picked by Tuesday.

The two-day conference will see the communities of Greater Jonglei; the Anyuak, Dinka, Jie, Kachipo, Murle, and Nuer explore ways of restoring peace in the conflict-stricken region.
