Jonglei, South Sudan,
June 28, 2021 – Transport along the main road connecting two counties Duk and Uror in Jonglei State has been temporarily closed due to rampant insecurity.
This suspension came as a result of Thursday’s incident in which a convoy carrying humanitarian assistance to Greater Lou areas was ambushed by an unknown armed group at the outskirts of Duk’s Gadiang area.
According to a statement seen by Nyamilepedia, Mr. Tang Chatim, the County Commissioner of Uror confirmed that the road will remain closed until the security assurance for passengers is guaranteed.
“Some local youths and security forces have gone to assess the area. we are waiting for their report and hopefully, within the next two days the road may reopen,” he said.
Chatim stressed that the reason for the closure is that there is fear because, on Thursday morning, a convoy of 40 vehicles carrying food to the areas of Yuai, Pathai, and Walgak was attacked between Gadiang and Uror. The attackers looted 200 sacks of grains from one of the vehicles. No one was killed or injured.
He also condemned the attack, lamenting the incident comes amidst looming destitution in parts of his county.
The police spokesman of Jonglei State confirmed the incident without revealing substantial details however he assured that the investigations have been launched into the matter.
