October 30,2021—Authorities in Mayom County of South Sudan’s Unity State have confirmed that three people were killed and 12 others sustained injuries in inter-communal clashes early this week.
According to reliable sources from Mayom County fighting broke out betweem members of the Bul community on Wednesday, October 27th, 2021; however, the security forces intervened to contain it.
Speaking to the media, the commissioner of Mayom county, Mr. Chuol Gatluak Manime, a brother to the presidential advisor on security, Tut Gatluak Manime, confirmed that fighting broke out between his Bul-Nuer community in Wangbuor village of Mayom county.
According to the commissioner, the security operatives, who are deployed in the area, were signaled and managed to respond in time to break the warring parties.
“There is no further fighting this morning of Thursday. The security situation is normal and is brought under control by the organized security forces sent there to separate the two sides.” Commissioner Gatluak told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday.
“Everyone who was fighting is now at their home and the situation is calm,” He continued.
Gatluak also revealed that the clashes between communities were motivated this time by women related issues as opposed to cattle raiding..
“This community has a long historical conflict among themselves, almost four to five years, even before I was appointed as a commissioner of Mayom County. The issue was about women and not cattle raiding,” Gatluak added.
The inter-communal feuds across South Sudan are very rampant among the youth; however, politicians and community leaders are also accused of meddling in inter-communal violence for their own gains.
