October 29th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), which mediated the 2018 peace agreement has warned the government of President Salva Kiir of making statements that it said may exacerbate the division on states issue.
South Sudan government and opposition groups are in a loggerhead on the number and boundaries of states with the opposition threatening to opt out of a unity government Kiir said he will form on November 12th if the issue is not settled.
In a statement issued on Monday, following a two-day meeting in Djibouti, regional and international envoys said South Sudan parties – more specifically the government in Juba – must stay away from making statements that will exacerbate the division on the number and boundaries of states.
“The Parties especially the Government should refrain from making decisions and statements that exacerbate division on the issue of the number and boundaries of states,” the statement extended to Nyamilepedia partly reads.
The statement further said “The Government of South Sudan should expedite the process of ratification of the constitutional amendment bill and other security laws.”
