February 1st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), warned on Thursday that ceasefire violations in South Sudan is not acceptable.
This came after a military confrontation and fighting in Yei River state between government troops and holdout opposition forces loyal to Gen. Thomas Cirilo threatened to spoil the already fragile peace deal.
In a statement issued on Thursday, IGAD special envoy for South Sudan, Ambassador Ismail Wais, said the regional body is dismayed over reports of fighting in some parts of the country.
“IGAD is dismayed at the reports of recurring violations of the Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities, Protection of Civilians and Humanitarian Access,” he said in the statement obtained by the Nyamilepedia.
“The people of South Sudan are tired of war and violence. The rule of fear must end. The Ceasefire agreement has been signed by all of the warring parties and it is the responsibility of all to respect the call of the people for peace,” it added.
It said any violation of the agreement that aim at prolonging the suffering of the South Sudanese people is unacceptable.
“Any violation of the agreement that affect the aspiration of the South Sudanese people is unacceptable,” the statement said.
The statement further said the regional body which mediated the peace agreement wants all the parties to the South Sudanese. Conflict to “adhere to the Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities, Protection of Civilians and Humanitarian Access.”
