December 1st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in a communique issued on Friday urged the international community to lift sanctions imposed on Sudan and South Sudan.
Sudan has been under a sanction regime from the United States since 1993 when it was designated as a state sponsor of terrorism. South Sudan was sanctioned following the outbreak of the civil war in 2013 which has since killed and displaced many in the world’s youngest country.
In a communique issued following the 13th Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government, the IGAD “Called upon the international community to lift the crippling economic sanctions imposed on Sudan and South Sudan to enable them rebuild their economies.”
The communique further said it was happy about “efforts by the South Sudanese Parties to the R-ARCSS in silencing the guns for over one year and urged the Parties to accomplish the pre transitional tasks within the extended hundred days and form the R-TGoNU by the end of the extended period.”
