December 4rd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The regional bloc, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), has proposed that South Sudan go for 21 states during a meeting conducted yesterday for the parties to the revitalized peace agreement in Juba, opposition sources said.

One source said from Juba that the government had two option for the     other parties: one to either accept the current 32 or go for 42 states. The SPLM-IO said it want the 21 state in which the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) agreed.

“The government gave all of the opposition two choices. One of the choices was for the opposition to accept that the current 32 states remain or accept an extension to 40 or 55,” the opposition official who requested anonymity said.

He said the IGAD then decided to divide the sum of the 32 and 10 states and divided it by the two given a proposed number of 21 states.

“The IGAD then decided to add the 10 states and the 32 giving a total of 42 divided by 20 which would be 21. The SSOA agreed and the decided to add two which would make 23. The SPLM-IO in the spirit of peace decided to accept the 23 but the government insist that the other parties instead make compromise,” he said.
