August 25th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has asked South Sudan President Salva Kiir to release funds he promised for the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement, a Ethiopian foreign ministry source in Addis Ababa said.
“He has been asked to pay those money. He must pay the money because peace cannot be achieved without those,” the source told the Nyamilepedia fro Addis Ababa.
In May, President Salva Kiir made a $100 million pledge for the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement but only $6 millions of those money have been paid and the National Pre-transitional Committee (NPTC), a body tasked with the implementation of the peace agreement, has frequently complained of lack of money to carry out all the tasks entrusted to it.
A unity government provided for in the peace agreement signed by Kiir and opposition groups in September last year was supposed to be formed in May but delay in the implementation of the critical tasks forced the parties to adjourned that action to November.
As the new dateline looms, the regional body said the pre-transitional activities are also behind schedule and no progress is being made by the parties.
