December 13th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is aware of the change made recently in the leadership the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) which resulted in the election of Gen. Peter Gatdet Yaka as the new interim leader of the alliance, an opposition official told the Nyamilepedia this afternoon.

Last month,  members of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) met in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and elected Gen. Peter Gatdet Yaka by 62% to replace Changson Lew.

Changson, then incumbent,  who later happened to protest the results and totally suspended the outcome of the election, was elected by 37%.

Speaking to the Nyamikepedia on Thursday afternoon,  David Lawrence Lual, a member of the National Leadership Council of the NDM led by Dr. Lam Akol and a member of the SSOA faction led by Gen. Peter Gatdet told the Nyamilepedia that reports on the social media that IGAD had asked Gatdet to relinquish SSOA leadership to Changson are not true saying the regional body is aware of the changes recently made in the SSOA.

“We notified IGAD and other partners in R-ARCSS about the change in leadership that happened and are aware of that but didn’t feedback yet,” Lawrence said. “The rumors of reports suggesting that IGAD told the Chairman-elect Gen. Peter Gadet Yak to relinquish leadership to the former interim Chairman Changson are baseless are misleading to the public.”

The opposition official further urged Changson to exercise sportsmanship and concede defeat to Gen. Peter Gatdet who was elected the new interim SSOA leader.

“I urge our former Interim Chairman, Hon. Gabriel Changson and co. to return to their senses and acknowledge the democratic process that happened, accept the results and concede the defeat with sportsmanship for the sake of the alliance to prevail and remain united,” he said.

He further said there is a need to restore the unity of SSOA so as to enforce the chaired principles of the alliance.

“We need to restore our unity and focus on our shared principles and objectives on which SSOA was created because we still have a lot of time ahead of us for the progress of the R-ARCSS implementation process,” he added.
