May 7th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has invited key South Sudanese stakeholders to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa for consultations in a letter seen by the Nyamilepedia sent on Sunday. In the letter, the IGAD called for the need to intensify engagement with the South Sudan’s negotiating parties so as to identify any possible options of ensuring that the next round of peace talks is successful.
“In order for the process to be focused and meaningful, the engagements need to be limited to representatives of th parties,” the letter signed by the IGAD special envoy for South Sudan Ismail Wais read in part.
The IGAD, in the letter requested each party to nominate five representatives to come to Addis Ababa Ethiopia for consultations before the resumptions of talks on May 17th.
“I would therefopre request you to nominate five representatibves to come to Addis Ababa for the consultations from 10th-12th May 2018,” the letter said.
“In order, therefore to maximize the likelihood of reaching a final agreement during the next round, which begins on 17th May 2018, the Council of Ministers and the Special Envoy consider that it is necessary to intensify the engagement with and between the parties,” the letter added.
South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013 after forces loyal to the country’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardiit and his then Governor of Northern Bahr Al-Ghazal State Gen. Paul Malong Awan went door-to-door in the capital Juba killing civilians belonging to the Nuer ethnic group sparking a nation-wide protests from top army generals from the Nuer leading to a civil war.
A peace agreement signed in August 2015 by President Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar and negotiated under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union (AU) in presence of Troika and other international observers collapsed in July 2016 following fighting at the presidential palace in Juba “J1”.
A previous schedule for the the next round of the HLRF which was supposed to take place in April in were adjourned by the IGAD to take place in mid may.
