July 16, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), which mediated the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, has given South Sudan president Salva Kiir Mayardit and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny until late this month to resolve differences and reconstitute the parliament.
Speaking during the 36th Extraordinary Assembly of IGAD Heads of State and Governments held via video-conference on Tuesday, regional leaders appealed to President Salva Kiir to dissolve the current TNLA before the stipulated deadline of 26th July 2020.
They added that the parties must reconstitute the TNLA in accordance with the R-ARCSS within seven days of the dissolution of the incumbent TNLA.
Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) welcomed the position of IGAD.
“It is a good step for the genuine implementation of the R-ARCSS. Although always IGAD given deadline is not honored by the South Sudan parties,” Mr. Edmund Yakani, the CEPO Executive Director said.
Yakani said the formation of the Revitalized Transitional National Legislative Assembly would be an “essential step in the spirit of genuine implementation of the R-ARCSS.”
