August 17, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The IGAD Executive Secretary, Mr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has this afternoon met South Sudan’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny and discussed the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
The meeting between the regional diplomat and Machar who is a signatory of the revitalized peace agreement on the ticket of the SPLM-IO comes at a time of concerns over the continued disagreement over who should be appointed as governor of Upper Nile state.
Machar had in June nominated General Johnson Olony as the governor of Upper Nile state, but Kiir has rejected him saying he would not maintain the security as well as peaceful co-existence between the diverse Upper Nile communities.
This has delayed the appointment of a governor for the Upper Nile state and there is fears that the issue could cause a delay in the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
“I had fruitful discussions today with the First Vice President Dr. Machar in his officer,” Dr. Workneh said on Twitter.
“We exchanged on the status of the implementation of the peace process despite multiple challenges such as COVID19. I commend the efforts by the leadership in ensuring South Sudan people live in peace & harmony at home.”
