March 6th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) special envoy for South Sudan, Ambassador Ismail Wais, asked – on Tuesday – Gabriel Changson Lew to present election rules for the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA).

This, according to a letter signed by the IGAD diplomat and addressed to Changson, will help the regional body to solve the ongoing split within the group which was caused by dispute over election conducted in November last year.

“The Special Envoy for South Sudan Office of the Intergovenmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is requesting a copy of the rules and procedures governing the South Sudan Opposition Alliance internal elections,” said the letter dated March 5th 2019.

“If you have any other supporting documents which will help us understand the structure better please feel free to send us copies too. We hope to receive these documents as soon as possible,” the letter signed by Amb. Ismail Wais added.

In November last year, a election conducted in the Sudanese capital Khartoum led to split within the SSOA after five of eight representatives from the groups that make up the SSOA elected Gatdet to succeed Changson as leader of the alliance.

Changson who reportedly accepted the results at first later abruptly changed his mind and decided to cancel the results saying it was not conducted based on the SSOA charters which provides for leadership transfer every six months.

Gatdet who has since considered himself a de facto leader of the opposition umbrella wrote to the regional body to rein so as to prevent the group sliding into chaos that may jeopardize the peace agreement  signed last year.

“This will provide us with clarification and further our understanding of SSOA,” partly read the document seen by the Nyamilepedia.
