May 12th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Council of Minister which met in Juba last week has recommended in a communiqué that main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar be released from house arrest.
Machar who has been under forceful house arrest in South African since 2016 was released in May last year before going into the same status in the Sudanese capital Khartoum few weeks later.
In a communiqué issued last week in Juba, the regional ministers said they want the regional body release Machar given the fact that Machar has participated in peace process effectively.
“Recalling the decision of the 33rd Extra-Ordinary Summit of the IGAD Heads of State and Government Assembly that Dr. Riek Machar, Chairman of the SPLM/A-IO is free to travel and reside in any country of his choice within the IGAD Member States until the final determination of his status, and taking into account the fact that Dr. Machar has participated in the peace process in a positive manner, hereby recommends to the Summit to lift any restrictions on Dr. Riek Machar or instruct the Council accordingly,” partly said the communiqué extended to the Nyamilepedia.
