May 26th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Council of Ministers of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) will convene the high-level summit it announced on Wednesday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa during the closure of the previous round of the South Sudan peace process, opposition official at the venue of the South Sudan’s talks told the Nyamilepedia on Saturday from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

Last week, the regional body announced that it will give the warring parties a short break after a peace proposal that seek to keep president Kiir in power met a sharp rejection from the warring parties including the government delegation.

The peace proposal seek to create another vice president position beside the current two, the first vice president position and the vice president.

In an exclusive interview with the Nyamilepedia on Saturday, Col. Gatkuoth Mut Turoah, one the delegates at the talks representing the South Sudan Opposition Alliance said the IGAD council of ministers will convene on May 29th 2018 as per the information they now have.

“What I know so far is that the IGAD council of ministers will hold a meeting 29th [May] on how they should conduct next round of talks,” he said from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

IGAD mediation announced last week that it will convene a meeting of its foreign ministers after the warring parties failed to agree on a peace proposal the regional body presented to the parties for consideration. The peace plan gave the SPLM factions, on the top of them the SPLM-IG, the highest share of the power. The opposition Alliance said the peace rewards the SPLM party regardless of their factions.

South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013 after forces loyal to the country’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardiit and his then Governor of Northern Bahr Al-Ghazal State Gen. Paul Malong Awan went door-to-door in the capital Juba killing civilians belonging to the Nuer ethnic group sparking a nation-wide protests from top army generals from the Nuer leading to a civil war.

A peace agreement signed in August 2015 by President Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar and negotiated under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union (AU) in presence of Troika and other international observers collapsed in July 2016 following fighting at the presidential palace in Juba “J1” reportedly after President Kiir ordered a failed attempt to arrest the SPLM-IO leader Riek Machar.

A peace revitalization process ended without a formal agreement between warring parties last week in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa after the regional mediated presented a peace proposal that seek to share power between different warring parties.
