IGAD Council of Minister endorse Khartoum Declaration of Agreement

July 1st 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Council of Minister of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)in a meeting held on Saturday in the Mauritanian capital city of Nouakchott have endorsed the recently signed Khartoum Declaration of Agreement between President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon.

The meeting, in a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia said it has endorsed the agreement signed on Wednesday in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

“The Council endorsed the Khartoum Declaration of 27th June 2018, the agreement on a new Transitional Period of thirty-six months to be preceded by one hundred and twenty days of Pre-Transition period, and the resolution by parties to conclude on all the outstanding governance and security issues in the IGAD bridging proposal, the opening of humanitarian corridors, release of prisoners of war and political detainees, as well as the request to African Union and IGAD members states to deploy the necessary forces to supervise the permanent ceasefire,” it said in the statement.

President Salva Kiir, SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon and other opposition South Sudanese groups signed the Khartoum Declaration which includes a ceasefire agreement which came into force on Saturday night.

The two leaders are also expected to hold another round of the face-to-face meeting which started in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa in late June.
