Nov 15, 2021 — South Sudan’s ex-deputy minister of interior, Capt. Mabior Garang de Mabior, is battling some unknown illness in Nairobi, Kenya, but remains positive to be alive.
According to a Public Notice released through social media and attributed to Mabior, the former deputy minister and Kitgwang aspirant announced that he is in the hospital to get his gallbladder removed, adding that he has been suffering from Cholecystitis, which refers to an inflammation of the gallbladder, for years.
“I am currently in the hospital to get my gallbladder taken out. I have been suffering from Cholecystitis, a condition which developed after my mysterious autoimmune disease started to resolve on its own following three years of slow recovery.” Capt. Mabior said.Â
Mabior said he has been suffering from autoimmune disease, which is an abnormal immune response to a functioning body part, but until these days the exact autoimmune disease remains unknown.
According to medical experts, there are at least 80 types of autoimmune diseases, but what Garang suffers from does not seems to be among the known ones and that makes its treatment even more complex. Â
“There is no diagnosis to this day. After many tests, no virus has ever been found to pin down the autoimmune disease.” Mabior Garang said.
He believes his autoimmune condition began developing in 2018 when he found himself slowly losing his vision which started from the right eye [left optical nerves] and quickly spread across his entire left body parts.Â
“It started suddenly after I returned from the IGAD – HLRF talks in Addis Ababa. This was in February 2018. It started by blinding my right eye and the doctor thought it was optic neuritis, then they thought it was MS as it spread to my ears and the entire left side of my body.” Mabior said.
“The left eye was later affected too.” He continued.
According to his medical doctors, what Mabior could be suffering from could be Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a more unpredictable disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.Â
MS is a potentially disabling disease that can cause permanent damage or deterioration of the nerves, affecting both the brain and the spinal cord; however, Mabior thinks his medical doctors are just confused up to now.Â
“They later thought it was connective tissue disorder. They seem confused up to now. I am happy to be alive though!” Mabior continued.
Mabior recently returned to Juba and pledged to work with president Kiir after opposing his leadership for more than a decade. He apologized for some of his criticisms and pledged to come back to Juba after seeking better medical services in Kenya.
