January 6th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A holdout opposition group has accused a South Sudan pro-government militia of carrying out civilian massacre in Wunduroba, a Central Equatoria village near the capital Juba, last week.
The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) which is not a signatory to the revitalized peace agreement and led by Dr. Hakim Dario said in a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia that Mathiang Anyor, a pro-government militia, was responsible for the massacred which killed almost 20 people near the capital Juba.
“PDM strongly condemns, with a deep sense of outrage, the continuing actions of Mathiang Anyoor who are targeting the innocent Wonduruba civilians in the latest massacre of over 20 Wonduruba villagers, including children, women and the elderly,” the statement partly said.
The statement further said it hold responsible, South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit of the incident which also stirred an international uproar calling for its investigation urging the CTSAMMVT to investigate the incident.
“PDM holds the incumbent President Salva Kiir responsible for the latest atrocities against innocent civilians in Equatoria, who have become Mathiang Anyoor’s soft target of revenge for their reported losses (of 15 militia men) in battlefields with the armed forces of NAS at Katigiri in Central Equatoria,” urging the “CTSAMMVT to urgently investigate the atrocities and publish its findings.”
“It’s no secret that this militia recruited and maintained by President Kiir at Luri, is known to consistently exact revenge and indiscriminate attacks on innocent civilians whenever they suffered defeat or losses in the battlefield. The recent atrocities against civilians in Wonduruba are no exception as a matter of Kiir’s adopted policy throughout since the militia was setup in 2013,” the statement added.
Based on South Sudan army’s version of the incident, the National Salvation Front (NAS) led by Gen. Thomas Cirilo Swaka carried out the massacre, a claim also disputed by NAS.
