June 19th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A high-level meeting of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Sudan and South Sudan is underway in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, the IGAD secretariat said.

The IGAD is the regional body which mediated South Sudan’s revitalized peace agreement signed by the government and opposition groups in September last year to end the ongoing civil war.

The 68th Session of the IGAD Council of Ministers is set to discuss the crisis in Sudan and South Sudan’s peace implementation.

Speaking at the opening session Wednesday, Ethiopian foreign, Gedu Andargachu, who doubles as the Chairman of the Council, emphasized the importance of reviewing the progress made so far by the South Sudanese Parties in accordance with the communiquè issued recently at the 67th Extraordinary Session of the IGAD Council of Ministers.

During its 67th Extraordinary Session on South Sudan, the Council agreed to regularly convene meetings of the Parties to the R-ARCSS, to jointly review progress of the implementation of the pending tasks every two (2) months, conduct regular Council visits and missions to Juba.
