Gov’t urged to intervene in Panyijiar flooding

August 17, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has been urged by a local advocacy group to intervene and help people in Unity state’s Panyijiar County after rains resulted in flooding leading to immense displacement.

Torrential rains have struck the southern parts of Unity state with many families displaced and fleeing to seek higher grounds.

In a statement, the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) urged the government of South Sudan to intervene in the emergency activities and help the people of Panyijiar county in the country’s oil-rich unity state.

“A South Sudanese human rights organization, the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA), which based in the capital Juba, calls on South Sudan Government to intervene in Panyijar flooding in crisis. The flooding began since 24th May 2020 and therefore, over 70,000 people were displaced by flooding according to local chief in the area,” the advocacy group said in a statement extended to Nyamilepedia.

“CPA’s executive director Ter Manyang Gatwech urged government to take action on 17 SDGS, Sustainable Development Goals in which goal (1) no poverty and goal (2) Zero hunger. There is need to observed civil rights such as the rights to life, liberty and security which is most need now in Payinjiar.

“CPA urged the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission to intervene immediately in order to help the most affected victims by the floods in Panyijar County in Unity State. According to assessment report made by SSRC 2,460 households were affected by the flooding in the Greater Dor in May.”

The most affected areas include; Dakom, Mabil, Pakam, Pachienjok, Pachar, Thornuom, Jiech, Payinjia, Kol, Nyal and Pachak.  The Chief Malony Chuol Khan says “the situation is horrible and disturbing” we are calling upon South Sudan Government to intervene urgently in order to secure civil population in Panyijar County’s Unity State.

“Many people affected by heavy flooding, it’s our beyond their capacity. All our livelihood were destroyed in the county. There is need for urgent intervention from humanitarian organizations so that we can have food and other basic needs”.

Chuol Maker a Youth leader in Panyijar County’s Unity State says the “community are suffering indeed and a majority vacated from their homes due to heavy flooding”. Currently people are staying in the following locations, Thornuom Payams, Yai,Tiap and Taweng primary schools, Mathiang, Lidit and Panhial.”
