September 12th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has said that the decision by the main armed opposition group SPLM-IO to move its headquarters to the capital Juba is a show of commitment to the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

On Wednesday, following a face-to-face meeting between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar in Juba, the main armed opposition group decided to move its offices to the capital Juba saying it would be irrelevant to work from outside the capital after the Kiir-Machar meeting.

Speaking to Nyamilepedia on Thursday, Presidential spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny welcomed the move by Machar’s group calling it a show of commitment to the implementation of the revitalized peace deal.

“We welcome this decision and it is a show of commitment to the peace implementation by the [SPLM] IO,” Ateny said.

Kiir and Machar signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

The agreement was signed following a regional and international pressure following talks in the Sudanese capital Khartoum under then President Bashir’s mediation.

According to the agreement, Kiir will remain as President and Machar to take his previous role as First Vice-President.
