December 11th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has formed a national committee to investigate claims by rights groups that around 150 South Sudanese women were raped near Unity State’s capital Bentiu by soldiers loyal to the South Sudan army, a government minister has announced.
Last month, many international right groups published reports accusing South Sudan soldiers of caring out rape and other means of sexual assaults against 150 women near Bentiu, the capital of Unity State.
South Sudan’s Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Awut Deng Achuil told a group of disgruntled women that the government has formed a committee headed by herself to travel to the Unity State capital to investigate what happened in reality.
The group of South Sudanese women handle over to the minister a statement calling for justice for the victims of rape in the recent incident.
“What I want to tell there is already a committee, and I am leading this committee to Bentiu to ascertain the information whether is correct or not correct,” Awut told the group of the women in the nation’s capital Juba.
She further said the committee let by her will do its best to make sure that they reach to the alleged victims of rape and speak to them.
“I wanted to see a woman that has been raped and speak to that woman,” Awut said. “It was supposed to be shared with the government of South Sudan, but we have no information at all.”
